READERS IN COUNCIL
Women bring honors to Japan By ROBERT ERICKSON Yokohama, Kanagawa Thank you for publishing the interview with Chizuko Ueno, the University of Tokyo professor of women's studies, in the March 5 article "Speaking up for her sex." As International Women's Day was celebrated March 8, the question of gender equality deserves to be spotlighted, especially in Japan. Before privileged princes and pompous politicians resume their pontificating about the male Imperial succession problem, perhaps it would behoove them to reflect upon recent events on the world stage. Japan sent its top athletes to the Winter Olympics in Italy, and what were the results? Which gender was more successful, male or female? In international tennis tournaments, which gender in Japan wins more matches? In professional golf, which gender makes a bigger impact overseas? In Olympic marathons, which gender has won worldwide honors for Japan? In the United Nations, which gender has been more effective in dealing with international refugee problems and programs? Just a few questions to meditate upon. The opinions expressed in this letter to the editor are the writer's own and do not necessarily reflect the policies of The Japan Times.
