Surgeon in fatal sex change faces trial
OSAKA (Kyodo) Police turned over to prosecutors Friday their case against an Osaka surgeon suspected of professional negligence resulting in the death of a 35-year-old man after a sex-change operation in 2002, they said. Koji Wada, 51, head of a cosmetic and plastic surgery clinic in Osaka, faces possible charges. The patient developed breathing difficulties during the operation on the night of Feb. 25, 2002, at Wada's clinic due to an overdose of anesthetic, but Wada continued surgery without taking appropriate measures, police said. By the end of the operation, the man was suffering pulmonary edema, but Wada did not transfer him to an emergency hospital and continued to give artificial respiration, police said. Some 5 1/2 hours after the operation, Wada finally called an ambulance. But the patient died of respiratory failure the following morning at the hospital he was taken to. Wada said he may have been late in transferring the patient but claimed he took appropriate measures to deal with the patient's respiratory difficulties. A 39-year-old woman died at Wada's clinic in January 2002 after having cosmetic surgery to shave her chin bone. The Japan Times: July 2, 2005
