(取材・文/ライター長野辰次) By George, he's got it By Toshiya Fujii Japan Today George Michael meets the press. PHOTO COURTESY OF WISE POLICY TOKYO — British pop singer George Michael, 42, is not one to hide from his past, no matter how controversial it is. In fact, he is embracing his past in a documentary, "George Michael: A Different Story," which opens in Japan Dec 23. The openly gay singer was in Japan recently for the first time in 14 years, to promote the documentary. Best known in Japan for his hit song "Last Christmas," Michael said the film is for his fans. "I feel if someone is going to spend money seeing you in the cinema especially, then you know they are your fans," he said. "The real point of the movie, for me, was to try to explain the other side of my career that was written about so much, but with so little response from me." The notorious restroom incident in 1998 being the most infamous, Michael has had his share of scandals and a remarkable journey up and down throughout his career — or "quite an eventful life," as he simply puts it. Michael is not hesitant to show what he went through. "Believe it or not, I am quite an honest man," he said. "It's easier to be honest with people who you know already like what you do musically. Also, when you've seen the movie, it's easier to understand how autobiographical lyrics are and I always try to be honest about what I write." It's inevitable, to say the least, that these pop star films are more likely to end up glorifying the artist involved, but Michael said that wouldn't be the case with him. Admittedly, he says "being nostalgic about Wham and doing an interview with Andrew (former Wham partner Ridgeley) were very enjoyable," but he quickly goes over the Wham period in the first third of the film. "You wouldn't quite understand how huge things were, unless you were there," he said about his achievements. In contrast, the documentary puts much more emphasis on what Michael describes as the "difficult period of my life." Though it was emotionally challenging for him to relive the period once again, he said: "If I were a fan, I would want to know which bits were real, which were not. I think even the most enthusiastic fan will probably find out quite a lot about me in this movie that they did not know before." Elton John, Mariah Carey, Ridgeley and other artists show up in the documentary as guests. "It's very important not to just have people that liked me. It's also quite important to have people who didn't," laughed Michael, though he didn't actually say who the latter might be. It took Michael 18 months to complete the film and he is ready to move on. "I think this is a perfect time to round off the first 23 years of my career. I am much happier and I feel like the difficult period of my life is over," he said. His boyfriend, Kenny Goss, with whom he has been in a relationship for almost a decade, joined Michael for the Japan visit. On their 10th anniversary in June next year, Michael said they are planning to register their union in England where there has been a recent change in the law to recognize gay civil partnerships. Aside from the movie, Michael said he has been writing music, and another Christmas song. "I kind of hope that the rest of my life is not quite as eventful, but when I look back and I look at the movie, I am very proud of the fact that I've actually survived for this long. Hopefully, I will make another film when I am 82." George Michael's doing just the opposite by telling all in a film. "I'm actually, believe it or not, quite an honest man," the British singer said at a Tokyo news conference to promote "George Michael: A Different Story." Directed by Southan Morris, the documentary traces Michael's life and career. In the first half, Michael, born in 1963 in London as the son of a Greek-Cypriot immigrant, looks back on his childhood and his days with pop duo Wham! The second half focuses on his private life, including his relationship with late partner Anselmo Feleppa, his lawsuit against Sony Music in 1993, his arrest for a lewd act in a Beverly Hills park restroom in 1998 and his coming out the same year. Michael said the point of making the film was to explain the other side of his story--not what tabloids had written about him. Although he found filming about past hardships depressing, the singer said his current partner, Kenny Goss, supported him. "I feel like the difficult period is over. I'm much happier," he said. Michael said that though he and Goss plan to tie the knot under a new British law permitting civil partnerships--in effect, same-sex marriages--the couple have no plans to hold a wedding ceremony. "We'll probably sign the papers on our 10th anniversary, which is in June," he said. --By Yuko Yamada Staff Writer *** "George Michael: A Different Story" opens today at Bunkamura Le Cinema in Tokyo.(IHT/Asahi: December 23,2005)
