リオデジャネイロ――ブラジルのオリンピック委員会は９月１日、２０１６年の夏季五輪誘致にリオデジャネイロ市が立候補する、と発表した。総会後に表明した。

同市は、０４年、１２年大会にも名乗りを挙げたが、いずれも落選している。高い犯罪発生率、道路渋滞や輸送網の不備などが原因とされていた。首都ブラジリアも２０００年大会に意欲を見せたが、断念している。

南米で五輪が開催されたことはない。

リオデジャネイロ市は来年、米州諸国の総合競技大会、パンアメリカン大会を主催するため、新たな競技場を建設している。

１６年夏季五輪の開催には、東京の他、インド、スペイン、米国、イタリアの都市が関心を示している。

Rio will bid to host 2016 Olympics

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil -- Rio de Janeiro will bid to host the 2016 Olympic Games, the Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB) have confirmed.

COB president Carlos Arthur Nuzman announced the decision after a meeting of the organization on Friday morning.

Rio made failed bids to host the 2004 and 2012 Games and were eliminated in the first round of voting on each occasion.

Brasilia was a candidate for the 2000 Games but withdrew before the vote.

Japan have named Tokyo as their candidate while India, Spain, the United States and Italy have also expressed an interest.

Famous for its beaches, mountains and carnival, Rio's previous bids have been undone by the city's soaring crime rate, social problems, traffic and creaking road-based transport system.

South America has never hosted the Olympic Games although Uruguay, Chile, Argentina and Brazil have hosted the World Cup. Rio will host the Pan-American Games next year and is building a new stadium for the event.
