Festival of Freddie events marks Mercury anniversary

Fans around the world were this weekend preparing to mark what would have been the 60th birthday of late Queen frontman Freddie Mercury.

Concerts, exhibitions and parties are being held to coincide with Tuesday's anniversary for the flamboyant singer whose death in 1991 was one of the most high-profile Aids deaths of the time. It led to him becoming a focus for fundraising activities to combat the disease.

Yesterday, Mercury's mother Jer Bulsara and his sister Kashmira Cooke visited the site of a new art installation which has been unveiled in the Place du Marché in Montreux - where Mercury had a home - to mark the occasion. Other events will take place in Cape Town, Cologne, Vienna and Tokyo over the next few days.

In London, Mercury's former bandmates, the guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor, will be taking part in a fundraising performance of the Queen musical We Will Rock You at the Dominion Theatre in London, also on Tuesday. Birthday presents will be collected and later auctioned in aid of The Mercury Phoenix Trust, the Aids charity set up by the remaining members of Queen and their manager, Jim Beach, to fight the virus.

The death of the Zanzibar-born singer, whose biggest hits included "Bohemian Rhapsody" and "We Are the Champions", will also be marked with the release of a CD and a DVD.

Also in London will be a 60th-anniversary photographic exhibition featuring images of Mercury from public and private collections, at the Proud Central Gallery.

Zanzibar angry over Mercury bash

A Muslim group in Zanzibar has protested about plans to mark the 60th birthday of the late rock legend and Queen front man Freddie Mercury.
The Zanzibar-born singer who was openly gay was renowned for his flamboyant lifestyle. He was also HIV positive.

Muslims on the Tanzanian archipelago say his antics violated Islam and want a beach party on Saturday cancelled.

Zanzibar outlawed gay relations in 2004, a move which attracted criticism from gay communities around the world.

The BBC's Ally Saleh in Zanzibar says it is not certain that the star ever returned to his birthplace, although he remains Zanzibar's most famous son.

International stardom

The association for Islamic Mobilisation and Propagation (Uamsho) has threatened to hold a demonstration after hearing rumours that gay tourists were on their way to the island specifically to mark the musician's birthday.

Zanzibar's Ministry of Culture said it was aware of the issue.

Uamsho head Abdallah Said Ali said the event would send out the wrong signals.

"We do not want to give our young generation the idea that homosexuals are accepted in Zanzibar," he explained.

"We have a religious obligation to protect morals in society and anyone who corrupts Islamic morals should be stopped," he added.

Born Farrokh Bulsara to Persian parents on 5 September 1946 in Zanzibar, Freddie Mercury was educated in India before moving to the UK in 1964 where he led the international supergroup Queen to stardom.

イスラム教団体は、ゲイであることを公言し派手な生活を送っていたマーキュリーはイスラムを冒涜するものであり、土曜日（９日）に行なわれる予定のビーチ・パーティをキャンセルするよう申し立てている。ザンジバルは、'04年から同性愛の関係を結ぶことを法律で禁じている。

Association for Islamic Mobilisation and Propagationのリーダーは「我々は、若者にザンジバルでは同性愛が許されているとの印象を与えたくない。我々には、社会のモラルを守るという宗教に基づく責任があり、イスラムのモラルを堕落させるのは禁じられるべきだ」との声明を発表してる。NME.COMによると、もしパーティが開かれた場合、同団体はデモを行なう恐れがあるという。
