【5月28日 AFP】ゲイの利用者が多いメルボルン（Melbourne）のホテルに、異性愛者の宿泊を断る権利が認められた。28日、オーストラリア放送協会（Australian Broadcasting Corporation、ABC）が伝えた。

　「ピールホテル（Peel Hotel）」はゲイの利用者が多いことから、異性愛者らによる利用者への誹謗中傷を防ぐため、機会均等法（Equal Opportunity Act）の適用除外を求めていた。申請の理由として同ホテルは、これまで特に、結婚を控えた人の激励を目的とした大人数のパーティ「ヘンナイト（hen night）」を催すグループの振る舞いが問題だったことを挙げている。

　ビクトリア（Vicotria）州民事行政審判所（Civil and Administrative Tribunal、VCAT）の裁定により、ピールホテルは利用者の安全と快適性を脅かすおそれのある人物の入館を拒否することができる。

　人権団体「Liberty Victoria」のMichael Pearce副会長は、「VCATは、同性愛者がハラスメントを受けることなく集まることのできる場所は少ないと判断したのだろう」と述べ、今回の決定を歓迎した。

A hotel in the south eastern city of Melbourne has won an exemption from Australian anti-discrimination legislation.

The hotel will be allowed to refuse entry to heterosexual men and women, contrary to the Australian Equal Opportunity Act.

The management of the Peel Hotel say they applied for the exemption to prevent insults and abuse being directed at its mainly gay patrons.

The hotel raised concern about large groups of heterosexual men and groups of women on 'hen's nights' which celebrate a woman's forthcoming marriage.

A civil law tribunal gave the hotel the right to refuse entry to people considered a threat to the safety and comfort of its patrons.

Civil liberties group, Liberty Victoria, vice-president Michael Pearce says it is a sensible decision.

"There are numerous places where heterosexual people can go and I think what (the tribunal) has said is that there aren't that many places where gay people can go and meet without the risk of being harassed or vilified, and that they are entitled to have their own spaces to do that in," he said.
